What is coining?

Coining is the process of manufacturing coins using a kind of stamping which is now generically known in metalworking as “coining”,

What is coining die?
Coining dies are the primary tools for the "coining" process, which is a type of stamping used to mint coins and similar items, used in pairs to stamp an image onto a metal blank to create a coin. One die creates the "heads" (obverse die) side of the coin, and the other creates the "tails" (reverse die) side, both featuring a recessed, inverse image of the final design.

Coining Dies’ Requirements

When selecting die materials, in addition to traditional considerations such as strength, and wear resistance, precision of machining this must also be taken into consideration. Modern coining dies are made from hardened steel, but recently we have received some inquiries about tungsten carbide coining dies as well. Due to the excellent performance of cemented carbide, it is becoming a new choice for coining dies.If you are looking for new materials suitable for coining dies, please contact Oston Carbon for further information.
