Cemented carbide is famous for its high hardness and is widely used in various harsh working conditions,so it is also defined as one of the most difficult materials to be machined, currently there’re a variety of processing methods for tungsten carbide, including grinding, CNC finishing, wire cutting, EDM sparkling, etc.

So, how do we cut cemented carbide? Wire cutting is divided into slow wire cutting, medium wire cutting and fast wire cutting. Do you know that slow wire cutting often supply parts with higher precision than fast wire cutting? As a professional cemented carbide manufacturer, today we will share with you the difference between them according to results.
1.Wire electrode: Reciprocating molybdenum wire is used for fast wire cutting, the diameter of which decreases after a long time of processing, while disposable copper wire or galvanized wire is used for slow wire cutting, and it can’t be used reciprocally.
2.Accuracy: Workpiece cutted by fast wire cutting is with +/-0.02 tolerance on dimension, while the slow-moving wire is detected by a grating ruler, and If the moving distance does not reach the predetermined size, the grating ruler will detect it and let the screw motor continue to rotate to reach the predetermined position, which could get a +/-0.005mm tolerance.
3.Cutting Speed: Traditional fast wire processing adopts a one-time cutting process with speed 6-12 mm/s,while slow wire cutting can be processed multiple times with cutting speed around 0.25-0.001m/s, the material will release stress after rough cutting, and the deformation will be smaller during finishing, which helps to achieve high precision.

4.Surface Roughness: fast wire cutting supply cutting surface with Ra3.0 roughness with obvious line mark, while slow wire cutting suply cutting surface with Ra0.4-Ra0.2 roughness, due to a diamond wire guide or a gemstone wire guide, which is fixed on the upper and lower heads and will not move, so there will be no wire shaking.
5. Cutting cost: At present, cost for slow wire cutting is around 6-8 times than that of fast wire cutting.
| cutting type | Wire electrode | Working piece Accuracy |
Working suface Roughness | Cutting Speed | Multiple cutting | Cutting cost |
| fast wire cutting | Reciprocating molybdenum wire | +/-0.02mm | Ra3.0 with line mark |
6-12 mm/s | No | Low |
| slow wrie cutting | disposable copper wire or galvanized wire | +/-0.005mm | Ra0.2 | 0.25-0.001m/s | Yes | High |
