As of press time, the latest price for tungsten carbide powder is 795 yuan/kg, up 3.9% week-on-week and 155.6% year-to-date; tungsten powder is priced at 825 yuan/kg, up 3.8% week-on-week and 161.1% year-to-date.
The main reason for the surge in tungsten prices is the recent volatility in external trade and economic news, coupled with policies related to the anti-involution of the non-ferrous metals sector. Due to the scarcity and irreplaceable nature of tungsten resources, our country considers it a strategic resource. In recent years, our annual tungsten carbide exports have been declining. In 2024, exports totaled 4,146.8 tons, with an export value of US$179.341 million. From January to May 2025, tungsten carbide exports were only 386.8 tons, with an export value of US$17.608 million, significantly lower than the same period last year.
While the surge in tungsten prices was expected, the daily price fluctuations have still caused considerable distress for alloy manufacturers and buyers. Transactions are often slow, and building trust takes time. Many manufacturers, in an effort to control the price of finished cemented carbide products, are using crushed or recycled materials, which poses risks to buyers too. By the time buyers make their decisions, the original prices are no longer valid.
Domestic tungsten resource supply is constrained by environmental policies and mining volume controls. Although the self-sufficiency rate is relatively high, its growth potential is limited. Future raw material prices are unpredictable,we advise buyers to maintain good communication with supplier, closely monitor policy developments and avoid excessive hesitation for essential alloy products,or purchase them in batches.
