1. Cracks
An important factor leading to damage and rupture of tungsten carbide rolls is the generation and expansion of cracks. There are two types of cracks: transverse cracks and longitudinal cracks. Transverse cracks are parallel to the axis of the roll ring, while longitudinal cracks are along the circumferential direction of the roll ring, the later one is the most fatal to the damage of the roll ring. The cracks generated on the surface of the roll are all caused by thermal fatigue, and these cracks must be ground off during regrinding.
2. Wear-out
During the rolling process of the roll, due to the physical friction of the contact surface with the rolled piece, the chemical corrosion and oxidation caused by the contact with the cooling water under high temperature and high pressure, the change of the surface quality and quantity of the roll is called the wear of the roll. 
3. Corrosion
Electrolytic corrosion occurs in acidic cooling water,which leads to loss of binder phase on exposed surfaces of cemented carbide, especially on cracked surfaces. After the corrosion occurs, the carbide particles are exposed and the wear is aggravated, and the life of the roll decreases sharply.
4. Surface breakage
The main reasons for the breakage on the surface of the roll ring are fried rolls and the surface collision during transportation and installation. No matter what the reason is, the breakage will cause stress concentration in the rolling process, and it will directly lead to broken rolls in severe cases. Therefore, the roll ring care should be taken during storage and handling.

The following points should be paid attention to when using tungsten carbide alloy roll rings:
1. During the rolling process, ensure that there is enough cooling water in the rolling groove to avoid cracks or even fragmentation of the roll ring.
2. The rolling volume of a single groove of the rolling groove shall be determined according to the actual situation. Excessive rolling is strictly prohibited to avoid cracks in the roll.
3. The PH value of the cooling water has a great influence on the corrosion of the cemented carbide roll during rolling, and the requirement is 7.0-7.2.
4. When the used roll is re-grinded or turned, the micro-cracks should be completely eliminated and all surface damage should be removed.
